Chapitre 13

How did you figure it out ?

E suspected something because of her behavior when he communicated around her
Then he went to the kitchen and tried to let her see the bib and she got all excited
We tried several times…

That’s fantastic !

Is it ?
It doesn’t feel like it
Now my brother and his family are sucked into my nightmare…

The phone buzzed and slipped through my fingers. Why was Aldan calling now ?

— I cannot stay long. We will not let anything happen to little Amelia. I swear. Can you let me talk to Ergis ?

I got up from the sofa where I had tried to drown my fit of anxiety with camomille infusion, and brought the phone to Ergis.

— C'est Aldan.

I picked up Amelia from the play mat and cuddled with her in silence.

— Oui je sais. C’est ce que je pensais aussi.

I turned around and got closer to hear what Aldan was saying, but from Ergis’ far away gaze I realized he was likely communicating.

Ergis raccrocha et me rendit mon téléphone. I paced in the living, rocking Amelia who was laughing from the movement.

I wanted to run away. Far away. Anywhere.

In a couple of hours Mom would be there for dinner, I’d have to speak to her again, lie to her and Steve again, in the hopes that later I can safely explain them that baby Amelia is in fact not completely human.

I pressed a hand to my belly to fight nausea, then got badly startled by my phone buzzing.

I’m sorry I can’t skip this conference
I might have the chance to check how the audience feels about chimeras
I will try to call you after. We will make this right

I went to pace in the kitchen to calm myself out of Ergis’ sight. I didn’t know how to take Aldan’s good nature. It felt nice, yes, but I didn’t know him. And I wasn’t sure I wanted to know more. I had seen enough severely ill persons die over the years to know better.

I sent a text to Bénédicte. She was probably on her way to the hospital now.

I miss you already

Je me sens seule

— I’m sorry again, Mom. I said. Steve told me most of it. I shouldn’t have said what I said.

Or at least not all of it.

— I never wanted to tell you because you were already too… unstable for that. If you weren’t always getting in trouble at school or pretending to talk with ghosts I would have told you.

— Mom ! Intervened Steve.

— That’s ok, Steve. I said, even though my fists were so tightly clinched that my nails were drilling into my palms. Mom. I just need to know the name of the clinic. It’s for getting closure, you know. Then I can put all that behind.

— How do you want me to remember the name of the clinic over 30 years later ?

— Mom !

— Alright alright ! I don’t know for the clinic. But the doc was German. I remember because she said it meant bird, and she did hop around like a busy sparrow. Vogel. Marta or something.

— I’ll look for the papers after the wedding. Said Steve.

Shortly after we ordered a taxi to the hotel, I found myself fiddling with my phone while looking through the window, while Mom loudly discussed a case on the phone with someone.

I’d sent the name to Aldan and Ergis while she’d gone to the toilets, but I still had no news. I hoped out of the cab and waited for Mom while she registered and got her key. Then we took the lift.

— Yo- You help Steve here tomorrow right ? She asked in a weirdly clumsy voice.

— Yes. He said he asked you to help at home with Amelia until everyone comes here at 2 pm.

— I know I know. He told me you brought a friend.

— I did.

— Will you go see Dad before you go back to work ?

— That’s planned on Monday.

I welcomed the arrival of our floor to get me out of the misery of this conversation. I didn’t like Mom how she usually behaved, but since we’d left Steve’s place she seemed dépassée. And that was terribly unsettling.
